Ever since we switched to Optus ADSL I have found it to be particularly slow, and in I've found that some websites are really slow, or don't work at all. The three sites I particularly noticed were anz.com which was particularly slow. So slow in fact that my session would always time out by the time I logged into my internet banking. The other two sites, bungie.net and chromasia.com would not come up at all. Last week I discovered another site that wouldn't come up, zooomr.com.
I also noticed a couple of other issues. When browsing photos on flickr.com, I would often find half the images wouldn't load and the ones that did, were very slow to download. MSN Live Messenger would also take a long time to log in. Much longer than I've ever seen before.
Last night I happened to mention all this to my brother-in-law who works in IT support. As I listed the websites that wouldn't work he immediately knew what the issue was. Apparently Optus does something slightly different to other ISPs in the way that it connects you to websites that are run on IIS servers. His suggestionwas to check the MTU setting on my router. If it was set to 1500 he suggested changing it to 1492. If it was already set to 1492, he suggested setting it to 1400. As soon as I got home I logged into my router and checked the MTU setting. Sure enough it was set to 1500. I changed it to 1492 and rebooted the router.
What a difference this made! All the websites I had been having trouble with now work, and everything else is much faster. MSN logs in as quick as I expect it to and photos on flick load almost instantly. It's surprising how much difference one seemingly arcane setting can make.
